Joseph Brough started out as an amateur with Burslem Port Vale in 1906, but left for Stoke when financial difficulties stopped the club right in its tracks.

He rejoined the new Vale, which had dropped Burslem from its name in 1909 and netted a club record 43 goals in the 1909-1910 season.

Brough moved to Liverpool the following season and made 11 appearances as a forward during the 1910-11 season and scored three goals, the first of which came only two minutes into his second match against Nottingham Forest at Anfield on 17th September, 1910.

After a couple of years with Bristol City he rejoined Port Vale in the Central League and scored 35 goals in the 1913-14 season.
