Although Ray Minshull was at Anfield for four seasons, he only made 28 First Division appearances for the club, plus a further three in the FA Cup.

Cyril Sidlow was the club's recognised last line of defence in the years immediately following the Second World War.

Although Sidlow was five years his senior, Ray had to leave Merseyside to find regular first-team football and signed for Southport in July 1951, making 217 league appearances for them.
