No.9: Peter Thompson
Left winger Peter Thompson caught Shankly's eye when he eliminated Liverpool from the FA Cup in 1962; within 18 months, the Preston man was a Reds player. An old-fashioned winger in every sense, the Englishman dedicated a decade of his life to the club, rarely ever missing a match and making history in the team which finally brought the FA Cup back to Anfield. "He could run every minute of every game, every week, every year better than anybody else," Shankly said of Thompson. "His work rate was outstanding, his fitness unequalled, his balance like a ballet dancer. I have no hesitation in placing Peter up among the all-time greats."
