Dalglish prepares left-back target offer as Arsenal circle

Arsenal and Liverpool are poised to battle one another for Jose Enrique's signature, with Newcastle still hoping the star will decide to stay at St James' Park, according to the Northern Echo.

Enrique is to return to training with Newcastle today, but the left-back is reportedly to decide where he will play next season by the end of the week. Liverpool have long been chasing Enrique, as Kenny Dalglish looks to find a fill for the left-back gap on his squad.

But Arsenal have lately emerged as favourites to sign Enrique, who will no doubt be craving Champions League football, which Liverpool can only currently offer the star as a long term goal.

Arsene Wenger should have a decent budget this summer, with Gael Clichy, Samir Nasri and Cesc Fabregas all poised for expensive exits from Arsenal, and while Wenger has always been quite frugal with his money, after going six seasons without a trophy, Arsenal will be looking at some big money purchases to take them to glory.

But Liverpool aren't out of the race entirely yet, and with former teammate Andy Carroll currently enjoying his time in Merseyside, Enrique might be swayed to head for a club that holds a more familiar factor.

The northern paper claims that Dalglish will put forward an offer for Enrique in the next 48 hours, with the Liverpool manager hoping to act quickly and steal the march on Arsenal. Liverpool have had some trouble capturing targets recently, reportedly losing out on Ashley Young and Phil Jones to Manchester United.
