Sky Sports News understands that Rio Ferdinand has retained the England captaincy and will lead them into their Euro 2012 qualifier against Montenegro on Tuesday.
Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard
led England at the World Cup finals in the summer, with Ferdinand
sidelined through injury.
Gerrard continued with the armband for England's opening Euro 2012 qualifiers against Bulgaria and Switzerland.
But with Ferdinand's return to the squad, coach Fabio Capello had to decide whether to allow Gerrard to continue or reinstate the Manchester United
defender.
And Sky Sports News understands that the Italian is standing by his original decision and will name Ferdinand as his captain.
Ferdinand was handed the armband in February this year when Chelsea's John Terry
was stripped of the captaincy.
