No.2: Emlyn Hughes
It's fair to say, Shankly was fascinated with Emlyn Hughes. The Scot had repeatedly tried to secure the services of a player who would come to be known as 'Crazy Horse' before he finally parted with £65,000 to capture the defender. A versatile footballer and energetic character, Hughes was a crucial figure in the manager's second great Liverpool team. "At 19 years of age we paid a good fee for him," Shankly explained at the time, predicting to anybody wise enough to listen that his new signing would captain England one day. "But if he'd have cost five times that he would have been worth it. It's debatable if there's a better player in the game. He's got everything; ability, guts, he's quick, good in the air - you name it, he has it." Of course, he was right - Emlyn lifted each of the Reds' first two European Cups and is joint-third in the club's all-time appearance list. Oh, and he did wear the armband for his country.
