No.5: Ian St John
Shankly parted with a club record transfer fee to lure diminutive goal-getter Ian St John to Anfield but the manager's faith was handsomely rewarded during the decade that followed. A natural born finisher with aerial ability to defy his height, the striker's exploits fired Liverpool out of the Second Division and onto two championships during the mid-1960s. St John's finest moment occurred on May 1, 1965, however, when his extra-time header downed Leeds at Wembley and brought the FA Cup back to Anfield for the first time in the club's history. When he eventually left the club, St John had found the target 118 times in Red.
